I remember singing this song growing up at camp, Youth Rallies, and on Devo nights when I was in college. I never knew the origin of the song. I reproduced it from memory and had it included in our songbook supplement. I recently learned the background of this song from a member who met the author of this song. The author had struggle with sin in his life, and never thought he could be free of it, much less delight in God. This song expressed the journey had made from bondage and despair to freedom in Christ, recognizing that Christ is the first love.
